01 / THE PROBLEM
Problem & objectives
Help field engineers connect Wi-Fi measurements to physical locations and produce useful installation documentation without an account or backend.
An offline Android Wi-Fi site-survey tool connecting floor plans, real signal readings, access-point inventory, estimated heatmaps, and local reports for field engineers.
02 / THE SYSTEM
Architecture & technology
Compose screens and ViewModels call Room/DataStore repositories and an Android Wi-Fi adapter. Domain utilities calculate signal statistics and bounded inverse-distance heatmaps, while local exporters produce reports and backups.
- Floor plan & site walk
- Android Wi-Fi readings
- Coverage estimates & reports
03 / THE BUILD
Implementation & key features
- Floor-plan import and two-point scale calibration
- Permission-aware Wi-Fi scans and connected signal meter
- Measured RSSI points, labeled heatmap estimates, and AP inventory
- PDF, CSV, PNG reports and local ZIP backup/restore
04 / THE BOUNDARIES
Security & reliability
Design notes and review considerations documented alongside this project:
- Projects and measurements remain on the device
- Android permissions and scan freshness are shown explicitly
- Reports may reveal floor plans and network identifiers
- Heatmap interpolation is an estimate, not a measurement everywhere
05 / THE DECISIONS
Challenges & trade-offs
Android permissions, hardware capabilities, and scan throttling limit observations. Interpolation and AP-placement advice need on-site validation. The independent browser demo accepts supplied readings and cannot scan Wi-Fi.
06 / THE RESULT
Outcome & engineering takeaways
A local field-survey workflow with timestamped measurements, inventory, and exports. The product website also offers a browser demo with clearly stated native limitations.
The engineering takeaway is to make the system’s capabilities and limits explicit. The repository documents the implementation and its current scope.
